Release 109 is here.In this briefing, we’ll take you through the latest updates to the aNewSpring platform. Small hint: this isn’t a skim-and-scroll kind of release. There’s a big highlight in here you don’t want to miss.Ready? Let’s dive in.

New learner experience

<h2>The new learner experience</h2>We’re proud to present part 3 of the new learner experience: a fresh and organised course overview!

This overview is often the page that new learners see when they sign on to your learning environment for the first time. For learners who follow multiple courses, this page could be a bit overwhelming.In the redesign, we kept the focus on an organised and understandable view for all learners. In the next pages we explain the biggest changes and the improved user experience this redesign offers.

These pages aren’t live by default. You choose when to test and activate them. See how

The old course overview was found in the menu under the name ‘home’. The new course overview is found under the name ‘my overview’. Learners can still click on the arrow beside ‘my overview’ to see their most recently worked on courses. Quickly navigate to these at any time, anywhere they are in the learning environment. New to the main learner menu is ‘profiles’. This menu item will only be visible for learners that have been assigned to a profile and gives profiles the high level entrance that it deserves.

<h3>Tabs for an organised overview</h3>

The biggest change is the different tabs on top of the page. Learners can choose to see all courses or only the courses that are in a specific status: in progress, not started yet, completed or ended.While learning, learners can see the progress that they are making: one course is moved from ‘not started yet’ to ‘in progress’, while another is just moved to ‘completed’. A small but clear way to motivate learners to keep advancing.

The new course tile is adaptive and adjusts the information shown on the tile to different use cases all the while keeping the tile as clean as possible to not give an overwhelming impression.

<ul><li>One progress bar: The tile no longer shows three progress bars. Instead, it displays only the most relevant one, depending on what matters most: activities, learning objectives, or retention.</li><li>More information: Looking for the description? Via the ‘more information’ button a modal opens with additional course information. Here the whole description can be read at all times!</li><li>‘Available until’: Do your courses need to be finished in a certain time frame and do you work with an expiry date to realise this? The new ‘available until’ tag on the image informs learners about the window they have, so they can finish the course in time.</li></ul>

Learners have three interactions to more easily find or organise the courses on their overview: searching, sorting and filtering based on tags.

<ul><li>Search: On the course overview, learners can search on the titles of courses to quickly get access to the course they need. If they are looking for content within a specific course, they can use ‘detailed search’. This will look for the search term within the course so learners can immediately navigate to the block or activity that has the piece of content they were looking for.</li><li>Sorting: Learners are now able to sort their overview themselves. This provides them a personalised way to organise their courses to what is convenient for their situation.</li><li>Filtering on tags: They can filter the courses they see based on tags just like before. The tags are now displayed ‘in full colour’ same as they are for designers and other staff side users. This makes them more recognisable as tags and helps learners use tags to find a specific group of courses.</li></ul>

AI functionalities

<h2>AI functionalities</h2>We use AI where it truly adds value: to simplify your work, save time and let you focus on what matters most: creating great learning journeys.

<h3>Learning journey advisor</h3>This functionality has been available since July 8, 2025.

The Learning Journey Advisor is our AI-powered assistant that helps you get from zero to a first template in no time. Whether you&#039;re starting from scratch or just need a nudge in the right direction, this smart tool will help you get started creating impactful learning journeys, step by step. <h3>Assessment Advice</h3>This functionality has been available since September 16, 2025.

For instructors and trainers, assessing essay questions can become a repetitive and labour-intensive task. At the same time, these types of questions are extremely valuable. They show what learners have truly understood and allow you to give targeted feedback to support their progress. That’s where the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.anewspring.com/articles/smarter-ways-to-assess-essay-questions-with-ai">AI Assessment Advice</a> tool comes in. A feature in the aNewSpring platform that helps you assess essay questions faster, more easily, and with more consistency. You remain in control, the AI simply supports your process by offering: a suggested score and feedback based on the entered model answer.This feature needs to be activated for the learning environment by the tenant.

Other valuable platform updates

<h2>Other valuable platform updates</h2>Alongside the major releases, we’ve also rolled out a few smaller updates. They might not be flashy, but they’re genuinely useful for your day-to-day work.

<h3>‘Last updated’ dates in the content library</h3>These functionalities have been available since August 21 and October 16, 2025. In the content library, you can now see the date that a piece of content or a file was last updated or uploaded.<ul><li>Content: Is it time for you to review your content? This can be a daunting task, but we’ve made it easier for you. It&#039;s now possible to sort your content on ‘last updated’ date. This way you can check your content one-by-one without losing track of which content you did or didn’t update yet. Click on the ‘show all as list’ button on top of the table and then on the triangle in the ‘updated’ column to be able to sort your questions and content parts.</li><li>Files: For files we have a ‘last uploaded’ date, this way you know exactly which files have already been replaced with the latest version and which one still might need an update.</li></ul>Good to know: all updates have been registered since August 21, 2025; that’s when we started tracking this data.

<h3>Events: re-enrolling to another event in the activity</h3>This functionality has been available since January 9, 2026. Do your learners always show up for the first event they subscribed to? Most likely the answer to that question is no…Admins have always been able to offer multiple events within one event activity. But as soon as the learner was marked ‘absent’, they completed the activity and they weren’t able to subscribe to any of the other available events any more.This behaviour is based on the ideology that a ‘negative’ grade (absent of a failing score) can also be a conclusion to complete the activity with. However the opposite can also be true. Maybe your event is mandatory and the learner has to complete the activity with a passing grade or by attending?

With the new ‘complete activity’ setting for Event activities you can make this happen! By saying that the learner only completes the activity after receiving a positive assessment, the learner is able to enroll into another event after receiving a ‘negative assessment’. Giving them a second (or even a third or fourth) chance to be present and to learn.

<h3>A new place for the ‘Course Completing Activity’ setting</h3>While the option isn’t new to our platform, it was originally used as a way to pinpoint a moment to send a signal of “this learner completed this course!” to external systems.Now this moment will also have meaning within our interface. As soon as the Course Completing Activity is completed by the learner, their course will move from the tab ‘in progress’ to the tab ‘completed’.

To make it easier for you to fill in this setting, it has been moved to a new place: underneath all blocks and activities. So when you’ve completed your course structure, you’ll have a reminder to choose an activity and it is set up within a couple of seconds!

<h3>Automatically navigate back to the learning journey after finishing a block</h3>This functionality has been available since June 27, 2025Within a template a designer can choose how the learner will move through the learning journey:<ul><li>Always go back to the learning journey overview after completing an activity.</li><li>Automatically go to the next activity.</li></ul>We’ve added a new option to the list:<ul><li>Automatically go to the next activity within the block. After the last activity of the block, return to the learning journey overview.</li></ul>This setting is ideal for learning journeys that handle different topics per block and where starting another should really be a conscious choice the learner makes. Or in the case that you ‘just’ want to offer a moment of recalibration for the learner before they dive into the next block.

<h3>Direct link to the instructor feedback on External and Webinar activities</h3>This functionality has been available since October 13, 2025.Learners who look at their result overview can click on an activity name to quickly navigate to the player. Here they can review the activity or the assessment that they have been given.The External and Webinar activities have long been an exception to this rule, but no longer! For these activities the learner can now too, quickly navigate to the player for a good review.This has been developed for the redesigned result page and is available for the learners of customers who have activated the page for their learners.

<h3>Parameters &#039;course title&#039; and &#039;course name&#039; available in the ‘Certificate about to expire’ email</h3>This functionality has been available since May 15, 2025.Learners can receive an email when their certificate is about to expire. The original email doesn&#039;t contain the course title or name and when editing the content it also isn&#039;t possible to add these to the mail.When the learner doesn’t have access to the course anymore, this is preferred.However, when you are working with recertification, then the course remains accessible. A quick link to the course in the email will allow learners to navigate to the course and to start working on re-obtaining their certificate, right away!

<h3>Improving errors pages and messages</h3>This has been an ongoing project for 2025 and will continue in 2026.It is never fun, but when working with websites and software it is unescapable: errors. Something ‘just’ goes wrong and a learner ends on an error page, frustrating!We’ve redesigned our error page to soften the blow and to best help the learner in the direction of a solution.

Release 109: Part 3 of the new learner experience

It’s time for Release 108!On Tuesday 13 May, it’s finally here: Release 108. This release is a little different than usual. In this article, we’ll walk you through all the changes to the aNewSpring platform.Let’s dive into the details!

<h2>The new learner experience </h2>We’re proud to present part 2 of the new learner experience: the updated results overview and account settings.Important: These pages are not enabled by default. You decide when they go live for your learners.

Test and activate the pages yourselfSuper) Tenants can select users who can preview and test the pages, before deciding to put them live.Note: Do you have multiple tenants? Consult with each other and make a joint decision.

Activate the new experienceReady to go live right away? You can enable the new experience yourself once the release becomes available.Testing a new learner experiencePrefer to test internally or inform learners first? You can activate the new learner experience for a limited group of (test) users. This allows you to make screenshots in your own branding and prepare learners for the upcoming changes.

Test your (new) Look &amp; FeelThis functionality will be available a few weeks after release 108.When you are creating a new Look &amp; Feel, then you want to preview the changes before going live. Until now, testing also meant publishing those changes for all learners.No longer! We’re introducing a test feature: you can now assign a specific Look &amp; Feel to a (test) user. Only they will see the new styling, no impact on the rest of your learning environment.This is perfect for testing colour schemes, fonts or the styling of the widgets, whether you&#039;re also testing the new learner pages, or not.

A representative results overviewA new page for learners to celebrate their results! It includes all familiar features such as certificates, links to completed activities, and MemoTrainer results, now presented in a user-friendly, accessible and responsive design.Do you use custom grading colours in your environment or courses? These will appear in a lighter shade on the new results page, ensuring a balanced and visually pleasing experience.This lighter colour styling will gradually be applied across all redesigned pages, eventually replacing the current colours.

Cleaner account settings pagesWhat was previously labelled as &#039;Account Settings&#039; is now found under &#039;My Account&#039;, consolidated into three clearly structured tabs instead of four.While reviewing notification settings, we noticed some alerts weren’t properly categorised. These previously “floating” notifications have now been assigned to the correct categories.To ensure users don’t miss important updates, this release activates the following three categories by default (if they were previously disabled):<ul><li>Progress</li><li>Newly Available Activities</li><li>Agenda &amp; Events</li></ul>If these were turned off before, users may now receive more emails than usual. Don&#039;t worry—each email includes a link to easily adjust notification preferences.Nothing changes for users who had already opted out of notifications—they will continue to receive none.

A refreshed footerA consistent experience starts with a solid foundation. That’s why all redesigned pages now include a refreshed footer. As a bonus, you can customise the footer text colour via Look &amp; Feel, useful if you need better contrast or improved readability.

<h2>Other platform updates</h2>These functionalities have been available since January 29, 2025.

Export the license overviewNot everyone enjoys data analysis, but it can offer powerful insights. The new export option in the license overview helps you track how many licenses are expected to be used in the coming period.You can export all data or select a specific timeframe, then analyse the results using your preferred tool.

New email notification category for instructorsWhile cleaning up the email notifications, we added a new category for instructors: Assessments. This is especially useful for instructors who only want to receive notifications about activities that need to be assessed.

Hide past eventsFinding an event in a long list can be time-consuming. That&#039;s why you can now filter by event status in two additional places:<ul><li>While linking events to an activity in courses as an administrator.</li><li>As an instructor on the &#039;Event&#039; tab.</li></ul>This helps keep the overview clean and up to date.

Bancontact added as payment methodThis functionality has been available since February 18, 2025. iDeal is the go-to payment method in the Netherlands. To better serve your Belgian learners and customers Bancontact has now been added as a payment method for Stripe.

Balance notifications will be enabled by defaultThis functionality will be available a few weeks after release 108.We don’t want you to run out of licenses unexpectedly, which is why the license balance notification will be enabled by default. If your license count drops below a set threshold, all tenants will receive an email alert.The default threshold is set to 10% of your last purchase, but you can adjust it, change the recipients of the email, or disable the alert entirely.

Release 107 is here!We’re excited to introduce new developments to our learning platform. This release, which goes live on Tuesday, 26 November, not only brings a powerful AI tool for content creation but also marks the first step toward a completely revamped learner experience.Let’s dive into the details!

<h2>Changes for learners</h2>Easy loginSpeaking about the learner experience; we’ve tackled the login screens first. We’ve revamped the flow and made several improvements:<ul><li>The login flow is now consistent across different use cases.</li><li>We’ve redesigned the login box to make elements easier to find. <h2>Changes for the staff side</h2>Create AI generated multiple choice questions in a flashWriting questions can be complex and time-consuming, especially when trying to create enough practice material to help learners feel confident in their knowledge.Now, authors (with or without a writer&#039;s block) can generate multiple-choice questions using AI. Simply click the &quot;+Question&quot; button in an activity or in the content library. You can create questions based on text that you enter or you can select one or multiple content parts, and the AI-tool will generate relevant, high-quality questions.Let AI do the hard work for you and be inspired by the questions it provides. This tool is also ideal for creating additional questions on specific topics to improve the MemoTrainer or adaptivity.

Hide past events for a cleaner overviewThis feature has been available since August 23, 2024.When updating an event, admins often encounter a large list. When most events have already taken place, this can get in the way of keeping a clear overview.We’ve added a new filter, which allows admins to choose to display past events, upcoming events or all events. This makes it easier to focus on the relevant ones and improves the overall clarity of the event overview.

Make it more organised

Mark the assessment as completed when a passing grade is reached or after all attempts are usedThis functionality has been available since October 25, 2024.Currently, an assessment is marked as &#039;complete&#039; once a learner completes the first attempt, regardless of whether they pass or fail. This follows the idea that even a failing grade is a result, which can shape the rest of the learning journey.However, when assessments allow multiple attempts, marking them complete after just one attempt may not always be ideal, especially if completion triggers the unlocking of other content.With the new setting in the &#039;properties tab&#039;, you can now choose when an assessment is marked as complete:<ul><li>After the first attempt, regardless of the score (existing behavior).</li><li>Once the learner achieves a passing score or exhausts all attempts (new option).</li></ul>This ensures learners complete the activity only when they meet the required criteria or have used all attempts.Note: This setting can only be applied to new assessments. Existing assessments cannot be updated with this setting.

Set when a test is marked as completed

Restrict admin login as other usersThis feature has been available since October 16, 2024.In line with GDPR and data privacy best practices, we have updated the &quot;log in as&quot; feature for admins. This change enables each admin’s &quot;log in as other users&quot; permission to be turned on or off. This improvement enhances data security by allowing organisations to limit which admins can access other users’ accounts, aligning better with privacy regulations and organisational policies.

Upload multiple files at onceThis feature will be available a few weeks after the release.Authors can now upload multiple files simultaneously on the content library’s “files” page, and instructors can do the same when grading webinars or external activities.

<h3>Looking ahead: An invitation for feedback</h3>This release includes several features that have been extensively tested in a BETA version, but we know feedback is essential for ongoing improvement. Release 107: Generate questions in seconds with AI

Welcome back to another update about our platform! This is Release 106, which will go live on August 6th, 2024. Take a seat and let’s dive into the upcoming changes and additions.

<h3>Available right away</h3>A fresh wind through your files!As an author, you’ve just uploaded an image to use in a content part. You want to reuse the image for a question, but in order to do that you need to reupload the image. Sounds familiar? Not anymore! We are announcing some big improvements to the way files can be organised in your content library.<ul><li>New content libraries</li></ul>For all newly created content libraries, files will no longer be saved in a ‘content parts’ or ‘questions’ folder. Instead, you are totally free to create your own folder structure to keep everything tidy and organised straight from the get-go.<ul><li>Existing content libraries</li></ul>For all existing content libraries, your current folder structure will stay the same. But, you are able to reorganise and restructure everything according to your taste.Go full Marie Kondo by:<ol><li>renaming files</li><li>renaming folders</li><li>moving files from one folder to another (within the existing content library)</li></ol>

‘Available’ and ‘in use’ status for contentAs an author, do you run into the problem of a content library filled with content that was ultimately not used in a template, but that you cannot delete?When linking a content library to a template, all content becomes available for use and is therefore given the status &#039;in use&#039;. Which also means that it can no longer be deleted.We have some good news for all these authors. We’ve adjusted the status of content, which will make cleaning up unused content child&#039;s play.To make better sense of what happens with your content, we’ve split the status of content into two:<ul><li>Available to be used: when content is linked to one (or more templates) but  is not actually used.</li><li>In use: when the content is actually in use in a template, be it in an activity or as an explanation for a widget.</li></ul>And that is not all! Content with the status ‘available to be used’ can be deleted from the content library at any given moment.

<h3>Available soon</h3>Events visible in the course calendarThis feature will become available on the 20th of August.The calendar widget is a handy tool. Learners can create a plan to stay on top of their learning activities or instructors can set one up for learners to follow. However, both parties weren’t able to see the (online or offline) event activities in the overview. So, we added them!<ul><li>Learners</li></ul>In their calendar, learners will now automatically see the event they’ve (been) enrolled in. Additionally, the name of the event is a link to easily open the activity.<ul><li>Instructors</li></ul>Instructors will see all events they need to assess in their calendar. When they click on the event name, they will go directly to the event page. Here, they can view the event itself and the list of learners that have subscribed.

Where is content in use?This feature will most likely become available at the end of August.There&#039;s more in-depth information for users that are both author and designer.Users that are linked to a content library as author and as designer, no longer need to go into the template to see exactly where content is in use. They will be able to see in which activity a content part or question is used from the content library tab!

New API calls

<h3>New API calls</h3>There are a couple of new calls for API users to further optimise their flows.Set instructor for learnersThis call has been available since June 20, 2024The call: POST /setTeacherStudents links an instructor to one or more learners, without specifying the courses.The instructors will only be linked to the learner when they have access to the course.Previously established links to learners, that are not specified in the call, are removed.See all groups from a specific userThis functionality has been available since July 2, 2024The call: GET /getUserGroups receives all groups that a specific user is linked to. From all groups, we send the group name, ID and type. You can also specify if you only want to get a certain type of group (like student or teacher groups).

Learners who want to use every available moment to learn, can do more in the app from now on. Why? Because messages and notifications have been added. This makes it possible to ask instructors questions on the go and to stay up to date at any time.<ul><li>Messages and announcements are added to the notification overview, which will be named  &#039;communication centre&#039; from now on.</li><li>Incoming messages and announcements can be seen in one overview, with a clear difference between read and unread items.</li><li>Learners can send new messages or respond to received messages. Besides that, they will be able to search through announcements and messages, and send questions to instructors about a question or piece of content from the activity player.</li><li>Newly received messages and announcements send push notifications to the learner’s phone. Learners can turn this off in &#039;settings&#039;. If the learner has previously disabled the main setting &#039;receive push notifications&#039;, it must be enabled again in order to receive them.</li></ul>

Tagging files

Authors who are used to tagging content libraries and content can now apply the same way of organising to files. Files can be tagged on the files overview page within a content library.

When you are creating questions or pieces of content and looking for a file to add, tags can be used to filter and quickly find what you’re looking for.<ul><li>File filtering is an addition that will go live later, in June 2024.</li><li>Images added by a designer, reseller or tenant, like course and product images, cannot be tagged.</li></ul>

Free products with direct access

Easier starting of free products (with direct access)

Learners who add products with &#039;free, direct access&#039; as a payment method will no longer end up on an unnecessary order page. Instead, they are immediately redirected to the course. If the product contains multiple courses, they will end up on the homepage. The learners will no longer receive order emails for these types of products.

Pre-recorded videos

Submitting pre-recorded videos

Learners who learn at home or at work via a desktop computer don’t always have access to a webcam. This made it difficult to complete a video hand-in assignment. The option to upload pre-recorded videos will now be available for learners who learn on the desktop computer. This also gives them a chance to edit their work and to submit more creative videos!

Screen reader accessibility

Further steps have been taken in our ongoing project to make the aNewSpring platform fully accessible for all your learners. This time, we’ve added the possibility to add text alternatives to non-text content.Non-text content, such as images, videos and sound clips, can be provided with text alternatives. They can be read by screen readers, so non-text content becomes accessible to everyone. Text alternatives can now be added by:<ul><li>authors using files in questions and content pieces</li><li>designers using images in the template</li><li>resellers who use images for products</li><li>tenants who use files in the look &amp; feel</li></ul>

Accessibility

<h3>Accessibility update</h3>It’s important to us that everyone is able to learn on our platform, including people with disabilities. And we took another step towards this goal! The (video) hand-in activity and the SCORM activity can now be performed with a keyboard.We are also working on the accessibility of the platform by means of screen reader software. Some preparatory work has been done, which includes making individual parts of pages (such as buttons and input fields) recognisable for a screen reader. The login pages are the first that are completely screen reader proof.With these steps, we are getting closer to a learner interface that fully complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

LTI 1.3

<h3>Use LTI 1.3 in the external activity</h3>Last release, we shared the first part of the update to LTI 1.3. Playing aNewspring through LTI 1.3 in an external LMS was the first step. In this release, the roles have been reversed. It’s now possible to play learning activities from outside aNewSpring in our platform, using LTI 1.3, via the external activity.
