The 2022 aNewSpring Awards! These are the best learning journeys of the year

This, at its core, is how you make a learner-centric, memorable and engaging learning journey.

Every year, our customers pick the learning journey of fellow customers that they found most inspiring. That’s right, it’s not us that decides who made the best product with the aNewSpring platform, but it’s objectively chosen by peers during the aNewSpring Awards. Let’s have a look at the top picks for 2022 and how we got there.

Road to the 2022 final

At the end of 2021, any of our customers could send in the learning solutions they made with our platform and which they thought could compete for being the learning journey of the year. Over 30 learning journeys entered themselves for this competition, a record for the six years we have been running the aNewSpring Awards.

To get to the shortlist, candidates had to submit a document in which they explained how their learning journey scores on the four criteria: Didactics, Learner Experience, Innovation and Overall Impact. This process resulted in a shortlist with 16 nominees.

In alphabetical order, they were:

AcademySuite (🇳🇱) Cranfield Aviation Training (🇿🇦) Dagelijks Leven (🇳🇱) Gemeente Almere (🇳🇱) Inzicht in orde (🇳🇱) KPE Groep (🇳🇱) Lean2Succes (🇳🇱) NIVOO Opleidingen (🇳🇱) Pink Elephant EMEA (🇬🇧) Propellor – Changing Projects (🇧🇪 ) TPT Consultancy & Training Ltd (🇬🇧) De VerkeersAcademie (🇳🇱) World Wide Industrial and Systems Engineers (WWISE) (🇿🇦)

Judging

Then it was up to the judges, an independent panel of experts (and very nice people as well). They assessed the submissions, walked through their learning environment and ultimately scored all nominees on the four criteria. This resulted in a top three: the finalists of the 2022 aNewSpring Awards.

Meet the four judges and see their thoughts on the question: what makes a learning journey inspiring or impactful?

Learning Developer, GITP

Jet Zantvoord

When the learner feels sufficiently equipped, confident and inspired to replace ineffective behaviour in the workplace with what he has learned throughout the learning journey. Because in the end it’s all about performance in practice.

Michael Hanly

Impactful learning journeys are easily measurable in results, performance and engagement. Inspiring learning journeys enhance this further by creating curiosity, while edutaining the learner to explore the topic in immense detail resulting in a lasting behavioural change.”

“I have a saying: ‘where boredom wins, learning fails’. This at its core is how you make a learner-centric, memorable and engaging learning journey. This means, instructional designers have a very clear lens on the capabilities they need to develop in order to drive a business outcome, and designing learning activities to target those capabilities.

Ger Driesen

“To me it’s important that a clear and deliberate didactical concept is used that reflects analysis of the objectives, related to the target group and their specific context. Relevance eats ‘cool design’ for breakfast.”

Learning and Development Manager, LPI

Scott Sheppard

“With any learning journey it is essential to make this as personal as possible to truly make an impact. An individual’s learning journey should always start with the question ‘WHY’ for either employee onboarding, leadership development, or functional upskilling.

Starting with WHY will benefit and inspire a team, or individual to meet business goals that will lead to long term success and retention. True innovative learning outcomes will extend past one size fits all, the end goal should reflect where individual performance goals are required and are relatable. L&D professionals should look past what they think ‘fits’, but have the approach of what the learner needs by assessing skills and gathering feedback through impact. Implementing learning styles and outcomes into any learning programme that tells a story creates a purposeful intent that propels impact.”

The 2022 aNewSpring Awards

On Thursday, March 24th, the hybrid awards show was broadcasted live from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Over 250 visitors signed up from 10 countries around the world. Some 75 of them joined in-person in Rotterdam and the others joined online. There were workshops, a hybrid gameshow and lots of networking. The highlight was of course to see the presentations of the three finalists: Beeckestijn Business School, ContactCare and the Dutch Mathematical Institute.

Presentations consisted of a five minute video of their solution, followed by questions from the judges. The audience would then assess each submission on the four criteria on a five point scale. Numbers were crunched and the top three rolled out.

So, without further ado, who won?
