School year 2020-2021. The ‘corona students’ are starting their first year at STC, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. STC used the reality of the pandemic in the students' learning journeys.
This learning journey was nominated for the aNewSpring Awards 2021.
STC Group is an educational institution specialised in educating young students and professionals, all with one thing in common: a passion for shipping, transport or port industry.
Two wonderful achievements
Learning is central to every school; it serves as a common thread. What happens when that common thread disappears due to a pandemic? First an expressive context about the reality of the pandemic had to be included, followed by the creation of (mandatory) online lessons, with the following condition: the online lessons had to be engaging enough to hold the attention of the students. With the functionalities of aNewSpring, they were able to create digital and interactive lessons that captivated the students!
Which learning tools?
Students of the course Havenlogistiek (Harbour Logistics) year 1 range from 15 to 28 years old and have different backgrounds and interests. It was a challenge in itself to connect these students with each other during the online classes. How has STC accomplished that? By using virtual reality, pub quizzes, online escape rooms and many more innovative digital functions. Within aNewSpring, the students had to perform various tasks and watch informative clips in order to gain more knowledge about port logistics processes.
No more fake news
By treating the COVID-19 pandemic in theory, the students got a different picture of the situation. Previously, they were flooded with fake news and it became harder to see what was real and what was not. By watching videos of virologists talking about the vaccine, they were able to distinguish between reliable and fake sources. The students got to know each other in a playful way and developed a whole new transport plan for distributing vaccines. It’s truly something to be proud of!
