This release, we worked on five improvements for the aNewSpring platform. We have improved existing functionalities and added brand new functionalities for you to try. Are you curious about what has changed? Let&#039;s dive right in!

Accessibility

<h3>Accessibility update</h3>It’s important to us that everyone is able to learn on our platform, including people with disabilities. And we took another step towards this goal! The (video) hand-in activity and the SCORM activity can now be performed with a keyboard.We are also working on the accessibility of the platform by means of screen reader software. Some preparatory work has been done, which includes making individual parts of pages (such as buttons and input fields) recognisable for a screen reader. The login pages are the first that are completely screen reader proof.With these steps, we are getting closer to a learner interface that fully complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

LTI 1.3

<h3>Use LTI 1.3 in the external activity</h3>Last release, we shared the first part of the update to LTI 1.3. Playing aNewspring through LTI 1.3 in an external LMS was the first step. In this release, the roles have been reversed. It’s now possible to play learning activities from outside aNewSpring in our platform, using LTI 1.3, via the external activity.

Reminder email

<h3>You have an event tomorrow!</h3>Keeping track of your agenda is typically something that you either excel at, or not. Whether you have a structured or chaotic way of working or somewhere in between, some help with keeping track of your appointments always comes in handy.With the new reminder email for events, you can now send an automatic reminder to learners and instructors a few days in advance. You can adjust the exact number of days for each event, and also add a note to be included in the reminder email.A useful tool to remind participants of how exactly they can reach the event location or what homework they need to complete beforehand. This way, everyone is prepared and ready.

Filter content by tags

<h3>Filter content by tags</h3>Content libraries, content parts and questions can be tagged for a while already, but the tags are not always visible everywhere just yet. An example of this is when you select a content part to display above a block. In this release, we have addressed this scenario and more.From now on you can see the tags and filter the table based on tags, when you are:<ul><li>a designer or author selecting a piece of content to use it, in a variety of situations;</li><li>a designer turning content parts or questions on or off for usage in the template on the &#039;content management&#039; tab;</li><li>a designer selecting questions as &#039;extra memo-trainable&#039;;</li><li>a designer selecting questions for the extra exercise functionality;</li><li>an administrator using an existing content library for a new survey;</li><li>an administrator selecting content parts and questions for surveys.</li></ul>

<h3>RIT-value now exportable for assessments</h3>It’s now possible to export the RIT-value, RIR-value, and P-value of an assessment activity to a CSV file. These statistics provide valuable insights into the difficulty, discrimination and effectiveness of each question. Therefore, use this information to fine-tune exam activities for better results and make informed decisions to enhance learning experience.

The days have gotten darker, candlelight fills our living rooms and gifts slowly but surely gather underneath the Christmas tree. While you’re trying your hardest not to open any of the presents at home, we come bearing a release full of treats that you can start unwrapping immediately!

Search functionality

Search through all content libraries at the same time!

You’re at the start of a new project, a new training. You know you have content that can be reused, but in which content library did you store it exactly? With our new search function, authors no longer need to look through each content library. From now on, you are able to search through all content libraries you have rights to, simultaneously.Apart from name and ID from content libraries, content parts and questions, you can also get results from text within those content parts and questions. This results in a clear overview of all relevant content for your new training!

Styling options

<h3>Style ‘explanation for block’ the way you like</h3>We have added three new options to the popular ‘explanation for block’-functionality:<ol><li>Place the explanation above or underneath the block title.</li><li>Choose to collapse the explanation if the learner closes the block.</li><li>Display the explanation with a background (for text content) or without background (for images). This way, your content always looks top-notch!</li></ol>With these options, you can customise your blocks and add beautiful visuals or important information to your learning journey.

Insights surveys

<h3>Insight from your surveys</h3>In the summer, we went live with the survey functionality that helps you collect feedback from your learners in a quick and easy way. Now, we improve upon how you get insights from the results of the survey:<ul><li>Template designers can choose whether the instructor should have access to the results of the survey in the instructor dashboard. Does it include questions about the instructor, and you don’t want them to see the answers? Simply turn off this option.</li><li>The administrator can export the results as a CSV file. In case you want to analyse the results further (in Excel for example) or share the results with someone else.</li><li>The administrator can filter the results based on course. This way you can see the differences in results per course.</li></ul>

Learner groups

<h3>Link learner groups to profiles</h3>From now on, you can link multiple learners to a profile at the same time, by adding a learner group to a profile. Would you rather do this via the API? Go ahead! Did you link a learner group to a profile? In that case you can see this on the learner group page.The option to link learners to a learner group through API will be available a few days after the official release.

Notification

<h3>Wake them up, before they go-go</h3>A couple releases ago (go), we added the ‘automatic logout after ‘x’ minutes of inactivity’ functionality. For learners, we are now adding a warning.Are they automatically signed out after 30 minutes of inactivity? You can set up a warning that will inform them about this after 20 minutes. This way you can nudge them to continue learning, before they are logged out.Are you in the market with Code 95 courses? In that case, this functionality is required.

<h3>Play aNewSpring courses via LTI 1.3</h3>Do you play aNewSpring courses via LTI in an external LMS? It will soon be possible to do so via LTI version 1.3! All functions that are available for version 1.1 as provider, are also available for version 1.3.And the best part? When it comes to LTI 1.3, tenants can set this up themselves on the settings page. No need to contact Support (although, we are there if you need us)!The current LTI 1.1 configurations will, of course, keep working.Do you want to get started with LTI 1.3? This functionality will be released in January 2024.

In our last release, we launched Surveys, effectively positioning aNewSpring as your Training Improvement Engine.In this edition, we dive deeper into features that offer you a lot of flexibility, helping you continuously improve your training.All these changes will be available from the 17th of October 2023.

Keep improving with greater flexibility

<h3>Keep improving with greater flexibility</h3>Edit conditions even after publishing templates.We listened to a lot of users who weren’t able to add/make changes to conditions in templates that were already published. This led to confusion and extra manual effort in fixing these conditions in activities and blocks.With this release, users can adjust the (triggers of) conditions even after the activity or block is published. <a target="_blank" href="https://support.anewspring.com/en/articles/70671">Read more in this support article.</a>Note: You can’t add new conditions or remove existing conditions. Three specific conditions (two for retention and one for objectives) aren’t just ready for editing yet as part of this release.

Save time by linking events to a course through the events page.We’ve enabled an easier way to add an event to the course, while configuring the event itself. So now you will find a ‘activities’ tab on the event concept page, where you can link the event to the activities in a course.

Easily update your survey content at any time to keep your surveys fresh and engaging.Last release, we launched Surveys so you can gauge feedback from your learners directly within the learning platform itself.In order to help you stay up-to-date with thoughts from learners, we now allow you to update the content in your surveys. This means adding new questions and content parts, hiding existing ones, changing the order of questions, and offering learners the most recent version of the survey.

Set the validity of certificates based on the specific requirements of each course.So far, the validity of a certificate could only be determined through the certificate activity, found within the template.This poses problems when you want to create courses for a sub-company since the expiry dates may need to be different for each sub-company. Imagine then having to copy the template and have different groups of users work in different templates - since the settings can’t be changed within the course.As a solution to this, we’ve renamed the ‘events’ column as ‘actions’ thus making it possible to adjust the expiry date of a certificate on a course level.

Committing to compliance

<h3>Committing to compliance</h3>Mail certificates to learners and stay compliant with Code95 regulations.Regulations change. But, we want to help you stay compliant even as regulations change.Code95 regulations ask for certificates to be mailed to learners upon achieving them — so, you can set up the certificate activity so that the certificate is mailed to the learner when they obtain the certificate after completing the necessary requirements.While this was built keeping regulations in mind, this is also a great way to build engagement with your learners by emailing their certificates right to their inbox!

<h3>Get the full picture</h3>Display comments added by learners in response to survey questions within the survey results.Within the survey activity, learners are provided with the option of adding comments in each question type (except the essay question). These comments weren’t yet visible on the result page. <h3>Committing to accessibility</h3>Lessons, assignments and assessments are fully keyboard operable.In order to be compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, we have to make sure learners can navigate and work on the platform with just their keyboard.This release, we’ve made the lessons, assessments and assignment activities operable according to the guidelines. With lessons amounting to around 90% of all activities we have, this is a huge and important milestone where learners can navigate quite a lot with their keyboard alone!

The Survey feature

<h3>The Survey Feature</h3>Continuous iterative improvement in small incremental steps sounds great on paper, but when it comes to actually implementing them into a learning journey, you of course have to know what and where to improve.The challengeAs the management guru Peter Drucker famously said, “If you can&#039;t measure it, you can&#039;t manage it.” — so the first step before improving learning journeys is to find out what it lacks.Gathering feedback from learners while possible with the evaluation questions, doesn’t fill the gap since they do not place the feedback in an overview or within context to derive meaningful insights out of it.The goalWith the survey feature, you can set up well-defined surveys that can be repeated in multiple templates and learning journeys and used to gauge feedback from your learners.If you want to know how well your training is performing, or what your learners actually think of your brand and offerings, or even why you hear positive feedback about instructor A and not instructor B, you can do so and validate your assumptions.

<h3>Working with Surveys</h3><a target="_blank" href="https://support.anewspring.com/en/articles/70658">Surveys</a> are one step ahead of the evaluation activity that we have within the platform. How?<ul><li>You can build a survey with the right goal in mind. A dedicated professional (apart from the training designer or instructor) with the right expertise can focus on creating a well thought-out set of questions.</li><li>The survey is not bound to a specific template or learning journey. So, gather feedback from a wider aperture and easily visualise where things are working well and where improvements can be made.</li><li>All results are collected in one overview.</li></ul>Create and manage surveysWith the Surveys feature, you can create surveys based on your role and rights and manage the content easily—create a new content library or rely on an existing one. Since surveys use the same evaluation questions and content parts from the content libraries, you can efficiently re-use your content!Additional permission for administratorsIn order to keep things clear and allow for division of labour, you’ll find two new permissions within the administrator role. The main one allows users to see results from surveys and the secondary permission lets certain users create and manage the surveys.The new survey activityWith this release, you’ll find a new survey activity type for the templates (and learning journeys). Learning designers can select the pre-defined survey (created by the survey expert) and add it to an activity at the template level.In order to keep things clear and fit the purpose of the activity type better, we’ve renamed the ‘Inquiry’ activity type to ‘Questionnaire’.Viewing the resultsOf course there’s a place where you can easily process the feedback!You’ll find one overview with all the results, per survey, featuring the multiple choice, multiple response, as well as matrix and essay questions.Templates to get you startedTrouble formulating the right questions of your survey? Hand-in assignments

<h3>Hand-in assignments visible to all instructors</h3>When the learner hands in an assignment for assessment, usually they would have to pick an instructor of their choice.We’ve changed that around so that the hand-in and video hand-in assignments behave like all the other activities—available for all instructors to assess (the first available instructor is able to pick up the assessment for grading).

By focusing only on active learners for a course, it becomes very easy to visualise the ROI of your offerings. We’ve added the value ‘state of subscription’ to the reporting engine to help you get this information.Upload .SVG images in courses, activities and productsUpload your icons and logos as .SVG files for courses, products and activities; ensuring the highest resolution!No autoplay for videosIn order to ensure the best experience for learners within the aNewSpring environment, we will remove the autoplay feature in the content types like, video, hihaho, vimeo and so on.Send learners directly to the access codes pageWhile the access code page has its own link, it leads the learner to the general login page. With this update, we make it easy for you to link your learners directly to the access code page so they can start learning even faster.Maths, no problemAdd mathematical formulae in your content with the MathJax plugin in the CKEditor. You learners can also respond with mathematical equations without the need for any special coding.

Release 101: Get the lowdown on Surveys within aNewSpring

One that we are very proud of at aNewSpring.You’ll notice in this release that the devil is in the details — the finishing touch to bundles, collapse blocks for large designs and additional accessibility in line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) lay the foundations for big projects we intend to tackle next year. Let’s dive in.All of these changes took effect on 23 May 2023.

<h3>A fitting finish for bundles</h3>With this update, you can choose to send learners a notification when courses are added to a bundle.Since the email indicates that they will be subscribed to a course inside a bundle, you can set up the email to make it clear where the learner can find their new course.

Collapse blocks

Designing for experience

When editing a template, it is natural for users to create several blocks and activities with their course content.The problem begins when the learning journey becomes quite large, taking you quite a few scrolls to reach the end. Now, with expand or collapse blocks, the hierarchy between blocks and activities is clear, making it easier to manage the content of the learning journey.As a cool addition, we also made it possible to hide the index in an activity. It typically shows the content within the activity with the question or content part name. However, we noticed that it sometimes contains sensitive information that isn’t necessary for learners. Now, by having the option to hide it, you control the narrative!

Bringing structure to content libraries

We’ve made it possible to search and filter for content that you are looking for through tagging within the content library.

Moderation

<h3>Moderation from a learner standpoint</h3>A few releases back, we introduced the moderation capability allowing you to have a ‘moderator’ following course progress and reviewing assessments performed by your instructors.We’ve added a ‘learner-centred’ flow allowing moderators to focus on the assessments per learner.

<h3>Leave your mouse behind!</h3>Accessibility has been an important theme as far as updates to our platform have been concerned. In order to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 guidelines, we focused on keyboard operability, specifically for the learner interface.It is possible for learners to control content parts, answer some of the questions (fill-in-the-blanks and matching questions), join discussions and view results with just a keyboard.

Release 100: We couldn’t have timed it better!

Do you ever feel like you’re caught between spreadsheets during the first quarter of the year? With all the goals and planning, it might seem like you’ve got more problems than solutions on the horizon.We see you. And feel you. Sit back, relax those tense shoulders and take a deep breath. This is Release 99 from aNewSpring — a simple one, because we don’t want to be adding too much to your full plate.Dive in to learn everything about bundles (we have quite the primer for it) and how we approach accessibility by complying with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Besides that, user experience is a strong focus for us, so you’ll find a quick update or two about making things convenient for you.All of these changes will take effect on 14 March 2023.

Bundles

<h3>Bundles of joy, oodles of fun</h3>With this release, we are graduating our ‘Bundles’ feature out of Beta! As a preamble to that, read on to learn more about why we introduced the feature, what improvements have been made and what goes live this time around as well.The whyFor learners who are subscribed to a large number of learning journeys, the homepage can feel overwhelming. Having tags and filters to sift through them helps, but we felt the need for something more to bring structure in a clear manner.Thus, ‘Bundles’ were conceived to offer more flexibility and freedom in how you structure learning journeys in aNewSpring. They make it possible to group multiple journeys together, optionally order and present them to your learners. It allows you to cluster several learning journeys, providing a better overview for the learner. To elaborate with examples, you could build bundles of learning journeys per year, per module or even a custom one for all the optional learning journeys a learner can choose to enrol to.

The finer detailsThe core capabilities of the feature involve being able to create bundles of courses, place templates within them, manage sub-environments and adding learners into the bundle courses. On top of that, we’ve been very intentional with the incremental improvements to the bundles feature.Some of the finer details we’ve added over the past few releases have been around:<ul><li>Conditional progress</li></ul>Apply conditions to a bundle, thereby unlocking sections in the program for learners as they progress through the bundle course. It is also then possible to earn a ‘bundle certificate’, by placing the certificate in a course that’s unlocked once everything is completed!<ul><li>Enrollment through API</li></ul>Enrol learners via API. This is especially useful if you perform subscriptions via API.With this release, there’s something new to look forward to:<ul><li>Flexibility</li></ul>Add courses to (or remove them from) active bundles. This way, the course stays updated and fresh.<ul><li>Enrol learner groups</li></ul>Add learner groups to bundle courses. This essentially opens up another channel of providing learners access to a bundle course. If you use groups to provide training to learners with the same function, skills or tasks, this capability could come in handy. The icing on the cake? It is also possible to do this via API.

<ul><li>More flexibility with templates</li></ul>Designers can add templates to bundles and administrators can add courses to bundles, even when they’re already in use by learners. This addition provides more control and flexibility to put together new courses in already existing and active bundles.In the week following this release, you will also be able to remove templates from a bundle, even if there are bundle courses attached to it. As an administrator, you can then manage the learner’s subscriptions to the courses that are about to be removed from the bundle in the best way possible.With powerful flexibility such as this, you can always improve or add to your offerings!Learn more on our <a target="_blank" href="https://support.anewspring.com/en/articles/70548">support site</a>.

<ul><li>Logging in and using the catalogue are possible with just the keyboard:</li><li>Some components, like the buttons, text-fields, tabs, and so on are operable with the keyboard. A few quick wins

<h3>A few quick wins</h3><ul><li>Hand-in files open in a fresh new tab</li></ul>For your instructors to grade an assignment that has been submitted, it is important to be able to view the assignment. So far, assignments were set to download by default. This wasn’t the best user experience, since instructors would then have to delete the file if it contains confidential information.Opening the assignment in another tab is more user-friendly. This way, the instructor can view it before deciding whether to download it.<ul><li>A shiny new PDF viewer</li></ul>That’s right, we now have an additional way to view PDF documents within the plus editor.The most important thing to note is that learners don’t need to always download content in order to view the files. Along with restricting downloads, it also performs faster!<ul><li>Add learners to courses easily</li></ul>Earlier, administrators had to navigate to another page to add learners to courses. As an improvement to this roundabout and outdated flow, we now let administrators add learners via a pop-up window that allows them to stay in the flow of activity they were performing. Release 99: You’ve got 99 problems, but this release ain’t one!

In this release, which goes live on 3 January 2023, there will be changes for learners and the backend of the platform.This release brings together styling improvements that will deliver better learning experiences. Also, you will find out how you can instantly put together a training program that looks professional and polished. Besides that, you can see more details about events and manage them better, and keep instructors and moderators more engaged through moderating assessments.Let’s dive into the details!

Readability & accessibility

<h3>Changes for learners</h3>An easy and subtle glow upLearners will notice small visual adjustments in the existing elements, to increase the readability and accessibility of the learning environments.We’re adding greater spacing between certain elements, such as the advice bar, activities and widgets in the learning journey. We’re also resizing certain elements, especially the activities, widgets and buttons. Learners will notice some extra space on the sides of the course tiles in the mobile interface.

Look & feel

<h3>Changes for the backend</h3>Transform the look &amp; feel of your learning environmentThe first of those changes has to do with the redesign of the standard look &amp; feel editor. Customers often had to invest a lot of time into creating a good look &amp; feel of their learning environment — there were a lot of settings allowing for flexibility but it was pretty time-consuming. In addition, the standard look &amp; feel was set up several years back and, therefore, quite dated.In addition to the modern visual elements and wow factors, we want to help our customers to begin with a nicely styled environment. So, all new environments will open up with a look &amp; feel based off of one of our themes.What are themes, you ask?We’ve put together three different, predefined themes that can help you create nice looking courses easily, reducing the time needed to create your own look &amp; feel, that fits your brand to a T! With these available within all environments, it becomes super easy to pick a theme, change colours and more at a single click of a button, since most other fields are pre-populated.

<h3>Manage events smoothly with more details about them</h3>With this release, we are showing more useful information about the events, making it easier to manage them for each of your learners.With this update, we are getting a little more learner-focused when it comes to events. You can see an overview of all the events a specific learner is enrolled for. Administrators can also see the course that the event is a part of.As things stand today, you can see which learners are subscribed to an event. However, it isn’t obvious the other way around. This changes with the upcoming release, enabling you to see all the events that a single learner is subscribed to. It will even be possible to unsubscribe that learner from those events.As an administrator, this is a useful overview to manage learners when there are a lot of events within a course.Learn more on our <a href="https://support.anewspring.com/en/articles/70498">support site</a>.

Moderators

<h3>Nudge your moderators to take action</h3>This update adds a few finishing touches to the moderator role that went live in our previous release cycle. These ‘touches’ render the feature more consistent and actionable.First off, there are small UX related improvements. One example is a status button that is colour coded and shows moderators and instructors the remaining actions:<ul><li>For moderators, a blue “Moderate” button indicates there are items to moderate. Is this button white? Then there is nothing (new) available to moderate.</li><li>For instructors, we show a count of the number of moderated assessments toward their existing counter for remaining to-do actions.</li></ul>To enable moderators and instructors to perform their roles better, notifications are sent out when an assessment has to be moderated or when the instructor has made changes to the reviewed assessment. Proactively communicating these updates to them outside the learning platform helps the moderation progress faster.In addition, these notifications also work their way into the moderator’s dashboard. For instance, icons will show what still needs to be done and the ‘to-do’ column will be updated. This way, the moderator intuitively knows exactly what to do.

Lastly, administrators are able to export the progress and statistics of the entire moderation flow. By doing so, they are able to see how much a learner has scored on an activity, who assessed them, who moderated the assessment, and on which date the activities were completed. The data can be exported per template, per course or via the instructor dashboard. <h3>A few smaller tweaks</h3><ul><li>Access code availability</li></ul>Moving forward, the access code option can be enabled only for those learners who are logged out, instead of having it enabled for both logged-in and logged-out learners.<ul><li>Archive users via API</li></ul>We’re adding the ability to archive users via the ‘addOrUpdateUser’ and ‘updateUser’ API calls. This way, you can ensure they don’t use up licences unnecessarily without jumping into the learning platform each time.<ul><li>Explanation for Question ID</li></ul>We’ve heard from users that a lot of authors don’t understand what the ID for questions are for. To clarify that, we added an explanation at the ‘create question’ step.<ul><li>Ability to edit event-related emails</li></ul>You can edit the contents of the email that learners receive when un-enrolling from events and when they’re being transferred to another event.
